Clod of Clay,

        Trodden with the
cattle’s feet;

        But a Pebble of
the brook,

        Warbled out these
metres meet:

 

        ‘Love seeketh only
Self to please,

        To bind another to
its delight,

        Joys in another’s
loss of ease,

        And builds a Hell
in Heaven’s despite.’

    泥塊與卵石

 

        愛情從不求合自己的意，

        也從不讓自己相安；

        它祇為別人獻出安寧，

        在絕望的地獄底，造出一個天堂。

 

        在為羣牛踏過的足跡裡，

        小小泥塊仍輕柔地歌唱；

        但祇有溪邊的一顆卵石，

        囀鳴著那末適切的詩行：

 

        愛情從來祇為合自己的意，

        綑綁別人為自己取樂，

        它讓人失去快樂，溢如流水，

        即便在天堂裡，也要把地獄建造。
